Budehaven girls win Cornwall County under 14 hockey tournament.
On Tuesday 10th November the Year 9 Budehaven hockey team travelled to Penair School for the Under 14 County tournament.
Our first game was against Truro School which after some great attempts and brilliant play from Chelsea Robinson in midfield we drew 0-0.
Our second game was against Pool School. Early in the first half, Erinne Bickle (team captain) scored a fantastic goal from the top of the D. Then the goals started rolling in, with another two from Erinne, one from Ellie Maynard and a fantastic goal from Emily Curry, one of the best in the tournament!
Petra Reps scored a lovely one on the post, and with Ella Henwood-Waters scoring an interesting goal the match ended on a high with a great score of 7-0 to Budehaven.
The next two games against Helston and Liskeard were defended well by Assumpta Britton. Our efforts had paid off and we went through to the semis only beaten on goal difference.
Faced with Truro who we had already played earlier in the competition we knew we had to get the goals in. As the second half was nearing, Erinne took a break for it, dribbled from the half-way line and scored the first goal.
With some amazing defending from Katie Fry and Lucy Fanet, they failed to score which secured our place in the final. Knowing Truro High (the previous tournament winners) were our opponents we got a bit worried!!
Strong defending from Katie, Lucy, Amber Courtenay and Jemima Smale stopped them getting a shot at goal.
Eventually we scored and spirits lifted as we ran back to the half way line to restart the match. Despite some great marking from Megan Foster they managed to equalise and take the lead shortly after.
Budehaven, more determined than ever, responded with seconds to go, with a lovely cross from Erinne straight to Ellie’s stick on the post and she tapped it in. Bringing the score to a nail biting 2-2.
Both teams knowing that we now had to go to penalty flicks were petrified, Truro won the toss, and led our goalie Jamie-Lea Yeomans to save the first flick taken by Truro, Katie scored for Bude first, and with Jamie not letting in a single flick, Ellie and Ella’s penalties completed the tournament as Bude were given the title as best school in Cornwall.
We would like to thank Mr Latter and Mrs Walter for all their hard work, organising and training the team, and helping us become Cornwall Champions.
We are now off to Clifton College in Bristol for the West of England Finals on Sunday 29th November. Wish us luck or best still come and support us!
