Title: Sensors, smells and science – measuring the amount of pollution in our air
Speaker: Benjamin Barrett
Description:
What creates more pollution, your school bus or a sausage? My job as an air pollution scientist at King’s College London is to answer questions like this using advanced miniaturised technology and very large computers. More importantly, I research the impact of air pollution on our health, and ways in which it can be improved. While everyone is taught about the importance of clean water and sensible eating, we think very little about what we’re breathing. Even in Bude, there are sources of air pollution, but they’re mostly invisible gases or particles so small you can’t see them. Through the use of willing volunteers, masks, magnets and ultrafine particulate diffusion charging, I will make the invisible visible. I will explain how air pollution is measured, what’s it’s made of and how we can take steps to breathe healthier air.
