Last Monday the weather may have looked wild and stormy, but y10 and Y12 Art students were ready with their sketchbooks, pencils and cameras to take in the wonderful Artwork at the Burton Art Gallery & Broomhill Sculpture Park. This year, we have incorporated the new and exciting element of sculpture into our KS4 & 5 Curriculum, and so seeing these inspiring ceramics and sculptures in the galleries and garden was such a valuable and important experience for our students.
Connor Coulston was the headlining Ceramicist, exhibiting at the Burton Art Gallery. ‘Connor Coulston graduated with his MA at the Royal College of Art in 2017. Recent achievements include being selected as 1 of 50 artists commissioned from Sky Arts to explore what it means to be British, post-Brexit. Being shortlisted for the John Ruskin, Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramic Prize and more recently was selected to be 1 of 10 artists to create a new body of work for the British Ceramics Biennial AWARD exhibition.’ The students really appreciated his self-deprecating sense of humour and contemporary use of materials, including graffiti aspects and neon light fixtures to his ceramics.
Katy Bright, one of our talented y12 Art students, was so taken with the work that she emailed Coulston. She was really excited to receive a swift reply from the artist stating:
‘Most pieces are a reaction to an existing piece that I have already seen, but with my own take on it. Most are autobiographical and I do see them as self-portraits. Humour is a huge part of my work but more of a satirical/ self-depreciation sense of humour.’
It was great to see the students so immersed in the experience and it underlines the importance of giving our students that opportunity to broaden their cultural horizons. All students are all presently assembling the work they created into their sketchbooks or creating large scale drawings, inspired by the trip.
In conclusion, I would like to say that I am very proud of the students and how they were a real credit to the school. I look forward to seeing how their creative sculptures develop over the last few weeks of term.
Many thanks,
Rachel Miller (Leader of Learning Art: KS4/5)
