From the start of year 7 to the end of year 9, our tutor groups get stuck into a series of inter-form competitions carefully designed to promote:
- Communication skills
- Fair play
We are a co-operative school and this exciting programme of events, originally inspired by the core values of the London Olympic Games, helps us to raise awareness of and foster the co-operative values that are so important to our ethos. Team Aspire encourages tutor groups to work together, including everybody equally, and to look to themselves for help when facing difficult challenges. Above all else, participating in Team Aspire is about striving to be a better person, and a better contributor to our school community.
Throughout the school year, tutor groups are awarded points by their Co-ordinator of Learning (Lisa O’Leary in Year 7, Anthony Dyer in Year 8 or Melanie Bardsley in Year 9). Points are awarded for:
- Success in inter-form competitions
These points can be tracked on the Team Aspire leader-boards, at the bottom of this page and are also made highly visible to students on the digital signage screens in both Stratton and Valley Road reception areas.
Following an update, it is not uncommon to see animated groups of students gathered around these screens, checking the position of their tutor group and discussing how the latest leader might have shot into that position!
Lead teachers from a range of subject teams host themed challenges at various junctures in the school year. With the support of their form tutors, tutor groups work together to prepare for these challenges and to put forward a strong team to compete in these high profile events. Last year, students made fireworks, slime and water rockets as the Science department took a lead role in designing exciting and unusual challenges for competitors to get their teeth into, alongside sporting activities, such as inter-form football and rounders, maths logic games, an ICT helicopter challenge and a traditional spelling bee. This year, students can expect to see more of the same, as the best activities from last year are carried forward and subject staff set their minds to designing mind-boggling new challenges!
