We are delighted to inform you that Budehaven School has achieved Regional Winner status for our Sports Leadership provision and 3rd Nationally, awarded by Sports Leaders UK.
For many years, we have created and delivered many leadership courses; originally introduced by our former Director of PE Mrs Denise May (MBE). Each year we enrol at least 50 Year 10 students and around 30 6th Form students on our courses. These students learn what it means to inspire others, how to be effective and engaging sports leaders whilst developing their self-belief, communication, team-work and problem-solving skills.
Our leaders learn through a hands on approach in curriculum and extra curricular time and develop their skills through various events and festivals held over the academic year with our local Primary Schools and nurseries. Students run multi-skills festivals, tag rugby, netball, football and rounders events, but our personal favourite is the pre-school book event, where we turn our sports hall into a real life book and approximately 250 of our local nursery children come to take part in the various activities inside the sports hall, across two days. Last year, the 3-5year olds were all dressed as mice as they walked through The Gruffalo story.
This year, all Year 7 students will complete the training for the Young Leaders Award. They can then continue their leadership pathway into Year 10 with the Level 1 Sports Leaders Qualification and finally into 6th Form to complete the Level 3 Sports Leaders Qualification; this course once qualified will also provide them with 16 UCAS points for university entrance. Mrs Hughes has also welcomed the opportunity to deliver a Level 2 Leadership Skills Qualification through Science and I hope the future will also include the English and Maths departments too.
A big thank you to Rob Francis from BCL for coordinating all the events with the local primary schools. We have a strong team of support to ensure our programmes are carried out with efficiency, in order to allow our students the best opportunity to flourish as leaders.
Fingers crossed that this time next year we win the National title!
