Budehaven School was immensely proud today to be part of the build up to World Oceans Day and also to welcome VIP Emma Howard Boyd (Chair of the Environment Agency) back to our school to launch the Speakers for Schools initiative.
It was amazing to see the whole of Y7 taking part in creative workshops, using the micro plastic they had collected on our local shores to create individual hearts, which will form a larger heart on Summerleaze beach today for World Ocean Day. Emma also met with our Lego club, who were recently crowned FIRST® LEGO® League regional champions. Emma was clearly impressed by Team Deep Thought’s competition project which outlined the teams plans to rid Budehaven School of single use water bottles, which they strongly feel should not be sold at the school.
The passion and commitment from Budehaven pupils to sustainability and keeping our oceans free from plastics came through very strongly throughout the morning, with the level of questioning to Emma in the final assembly from both Y7 and y12 pupils being inspiring! Deb Rosser (founder of Bude Re-FILL) along with Avril Sainsbury (our Rep for Bude Cleaner Seas) both addressed the assembly and praised Budehaven pupils for their continued commitment to sustainability.
It is clear that as a school our commitment is looking forward to embracing sustainable solutions and as ever we intend to build upon the positive and pro-active community that already exists here in Bude. Finally, we encourage you to visit Summerleaze Beach today (June 8th) and to be part of a community that celebrates and cares for our ocean –here’s to an amazing World Ocean Day!
