Budehaven is inspired by James Golding
On the 22nd March Budehaven students and staff were inspired by a truly incredibly story of overcoming great adversary and never giving up.
James Golding was a high flying Estate Agent with a multiple property portfolio and not a care in the world when he was diagnosed with an 11.5cm tumour wedged between his spine and bowel. He dropped from 14 Stone to just 6 stone and was given a 5% chance of survival.
Miraculously he survived the emergency procedures the surgeons performed to save his life. His road to recovery was slow and at first all he could do was wiggle his toes but bit by bit his body slowly began to move once again.
He had to learn to walk and had to consume huge calories to regain his weight and strength.
As he grew stronger he started to ride, as an easier form of transport, because walking was still so painful and incredibly tiring. He quickly realised the freedom the bike gave him and when finally discharged from hospital, James decided that he needed to give back something to all the charities and doctors who had fought to save him over the last year. James decided to ride across the USA which is over 3000 miles. He was enjoying the huge challenge and celebrated his birthday in Louisiana on the 4th July. A few days later on route to Miami he was hit from behind at 70 miles per hour which knocked him 125 m down the road breaking ribs and removing the skin from his legs and arms.
He was flown home to recover and once healed went back to USA to complete the whole journey again. He completed this incredible feet in just 26 days.
James was diagnosed with cancer once more and had the tumour removed around the same time as having his first child. The birth of his son Freddie was against all the odds as throughout his treatment Doctors said that “he had as much chance of having children as the moon hitting the earth”
James once again beat his cancer and is currently planning on completing the toughest cycling road race in the world called the RAMM (Race Across America)
He has raised over 3 million pounds and counting for cancer based charities.
Budehaven students continued to talk about his inspirational talk throughout the day. James captivated the whole audience with his natural stage presence and truly incredible life story that lifted you high, then struck you between the eyes the very next minute.
You could hear a pin drop in every assembly. The questions from some of our students were heart felt and moving. There were plenty of teary eyes.
The number of students who’s positive outlook on life and ambitions to achieve great things has taken a huge leap forward today at Budehaven. I can only imagine the conversations some students had when they walked in through the front door that afternoon.
We hope that our students can reflect on James’s talk over the next few days and occasionally revisit his accomplishments against huge odds when they face times of stress and challenge.
If you would like to find out more about James’s life story then please follow his Facebook page, Twitter Feed and Instagram below.
I have also provided a link to his most recent challenge to break the World record for the most miles ridden in 5 days.
Here is the video of his most recent World Record Attempt.
