Budehaven Run first Christmas Meal for the Elderly as an Act of Kindness
On Monday 17th December, over 50 Budehaven students took part in a heart-warming act of kindness. 30 members of the local Bude Nursing homes attended a Christmas Meal held in the school’s dining hall.
The whole event was organised and run by the students from school. The day started early in the catering department led by Mrs Windle and Mrs Edwards. Year 10 Catering students prepared all the vegetables and cooked them in their double lesson; the vegetables had been kindly donated by Morrisons and we are very grateful for their support.
Meanwhile, the meat was roasting in the canteen and on the menu was Turkey and Gammon which had been purchased through funds kindly given from the Holsworthy Lions.
Next, the students decorated the dining hall with table decorations and crackers along with drinks prepared for the arrival of our guests. All table decorations and drinks were kindly donated by Sainsburys and once again, we thank them for their kind generosity.
Our elderly care home residents then began to arrive either by their own transportation or by chauffer service from our very own Mrs Bardsley in the school mini bus.
The guests were met at the door by our students who showed them to their tables and sat down to talk with them throughout the meal. Our waiters and waitresses started to take orders and then collect the food from the service hatch where students were plating up the delicious meal.
Year 7 Students provided drinks throughout the afternoon service. Once the main course was served, the guest were treated to delicious Christmas pudding and custard!
Throughout the afternoon service, Mrs Wade and Tom Marples played festive jazz music to create a fantastic atmosphere whilst Clive Symms from Symages Photography took some stunning shots that really capture the atmosphere.
Once service had finished our guests made their way back to their care homes and the Budehaven Students assisted in clearing tables and doing all the washing up.
Alongside this fantastic event, Year 7 students brought in Shoe Box Christmas presents to be delivered over the Christmas period to all 9 of our local Care Homes. For some of their guests, these boxes may have been the only present they received and it touched the hearts of many of the guests to open the kind gifts from our students. In total we delivered just over 120 shoe boxes.
One of the Care Home Workers stood on stage and thanked our students for their magnificent act of kindness. She said that, “Bude’s future was bright after seeing such wonderful students behaving so kindly today”.
As a school we are driving our kindness initiative across all 7 year groups and value this quality as an incredibly important part of a child’s character. If there is any opportunities in our community where students from Budehaven can take part in additional acts of kindness to support you, then please get in touch with our Directors of Key Stage and they will see how we can be of assistance.
