Now in its 12th Year, students at Budehaven Community School recently hosted their annual pre-school physical activity session based on a children’s book.
This time, it was the exciting story written by local author Matt Bond (Holsworthy) called “Hello Harry Horsepower,” which is part of the Farmer Jack & Friends series.
370 Foundation Stage children from the Bude areaand from 14 different settings attended a two-day event at Budehaven Community Leisure.
The event (6th and 7th February) was a fun, practical experience, where the Hello Harry Horsepower book was brought to life, based on the journey and adventures of the tractor as described in the story!
Budehaven 6th form Sports Leaders designed and ran a series of stations telling the exciting story to the young children attending.
370 two to five year olds came with their teachers, play leaders and other staff to take part and make the story come to life.
The young children travelled around the Sports Hall through various parts of ‘Shady Acres Farm’ activities seeing all the animals, machinery, and the agricultural show! They climbed up, bounced on, threw at, crawled through and balanced on gym equipment cleverly disguised to look like scenes from the book while being led and supported by students from Budehaven.
Over 30 students were involved including Community Sports Leaders and Higher Sports Leaders, all of whom were responsible for the organisation, planning and running of the various activity stations. The Budehaven students must be congratulated for their excellent leadership skills which really shone through to create a fun farming experience for all those attending.
The incredible teamwork of staff and students to make it such a successful event was unquestionable, for which recognition should also go to the primary leaders and teachers for their work in the build up to the event. All of the settings and their children embraced the book prior to the event and the costumes, face masks, etc., the children arrived with were brilliant.
Author Matt Bond said: “This is a fantastic event to be part of; seeing my book come to life is fantastic, especially all of the children enjoying it so much.”
Liam Dart event co-ordinator and organiser, added: “It was again fantastic. The Budehaven Community School pupils have produced an amazing event for our pre-school and foundation phase children in the Bude area.
The farming theme is close to the hearts of many of our children’s families.
The children explored the different activities with enthusiasm and confidently had a go at every challenging task in front of them, with the older pupils ably standing by to give them support if needed. The partnerships between Budehaven Community Leisure, local primary feeder schools and the pre-school nursery settings continue to grow and the book event is now not only expected but anticipated. It was certainly a very colourful, imaginative event, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Liam Dart of Budehaven Community Leisure said: “All the Leaders showed immense enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork from start to finish! It’s tough to maintain your energy and smiles all day for two days but each and every student made this look simple; their natural leadership provided a fun and stimulating experience for every one of the 370 children we saw. We are very proud of all the hard work and dedication each leader gave to this event!”
