Ashbury Golf Club: Annual Year 7 Netball and Football tournament
With the year 7 students now settling into their secondary school education and recovering from the excitement of Skern, it is time to turn to the start of fixtures at Budehaven.
The season for year 7 to start competing for their school starts with the annual Devon Secondary Co-operative Trust Schools Year 7 Football and Netball tournament hosted at Ashbury Golf Course, Okehampton.
The netball squad consisted of Amy, Emma, Carly, Cassie, Megan, Abi and Mollie. Their netballing campaign began with a convincing and impressive 10 – 0 win against Kevick (King Edwards V11) with some very accurate shooting from Megan. The second of their 5 matches in the morning, saw a 3 – 1 victory over Cullumpton, the only match they conceded followed straight after against Okehampton with a 3 – 1 defeat. Playing Tavistock saw another win of 3 – 0, with a 2 all draw against Holsworthy. Resulting from their efforts in the first round, the girls were winners of their section and went on to play Holsworthy A in the semi-finals, this was a closer game with a 1 all lead to Bude in the first half, with Holsworthy then equalising, but in the closing stages of the game Bude won 2 – 1.
The finals match was against Okehampton, this was a strong side and both teams played some good netball. The result was 7 – 2 to Okehampton. Budehaven were runners up! Well done to the girls for a great start to the season.
With the football, the boys played their first game against Kevicks, they won 1 – 0. The boys then played Okehampton and had a convincing win of 3 – 0, in theirTavistock game
The Bude boys had a 1 – 0 defeat and then against Holsworthy they had a 6 – 0 win. The final game in their pool was Cullompton and they finished off the morning with a 1 – 0 win. Overall, they were runners up in their pool and went on to play Holsworthy A in the semi-finals, winning 1 – 0. In the finals, they played Tavistock again and that was 1 – 1 after full time, so it had to go to penalties! The result was 4 – 3 to Tavistock, but what an end to the tournament; the team were runners up in their first tournament! Congratulations to the squad: Joe, Jake, Alfie, Bodhi, Will J, Jack, Will P and Micheal. A fantastic effort.
Both squads were a real credit to the school – very well done!
