Ethiopia Visits

Ethiopia Report 2009
Four teachers and eight students from Budehaven Community School travelled out to Ethiopia on the 26th February for the experience of a lifetime in which we were tasked with the building of a friendship between Assossa High School and our local secondary.
The link between Assossa and Budehaven was begun last year by the Youth Sport Trust’s “Dreams and Teams” project. The project was inspired by the Olympics due to take place in 2012 and aims to use sports as a vehicle through which to develop supportive friendships between schools in the UK and Olympic countries. Through “Dreams and Teams”, students are enabled to share their cultural traditions and learning experiences with one and other, and resource sharing between teachers is facilitated.

Reflections on Ethiopia 2011
The Ethiopian school link was established in 2007 between Mrs Denise May MBE, Director of Sport at Budehaven and the then PE Teacher, Mulatu, from Assossa High School as part of a Dreams and Teams Project with the Youth Sport Trust. The latest visit consisted of a group of 24 – teachers, students and coaches involved with 2 facets to this project. One was enhancing literacy skills, developing cultural and global learning, staff development and whole school impact; the second was enhancing leadership skills, impacting on community cohesion and creating new opportunities for females in a deprived country. Links were made to UK Sport, Netball South West and IFNA (International Federation of Netball Associations), who provided written and physical resources for both Budehaven and Assossa students.
Work will continue with Mulatu to further develop the coach education programme, which is particularly pertinent due to his new role in working for the Zone Federation of Sport and having the responsibility for sports development in the region. His proposal to assemble 15 female PE teachers from 15 different schools across 7 Woreda (Districts), thus impacting considerably on the development of netball in Ethiopia, was a great success. Budehaven supported this initiative by taking the coaches and students to Ethiopia to run workshops, looking at a range of skills and roles from players to coaches and officials. Not only did this further the development of netball in Ethiopia but it also enhanced student leadership and coach education making a real difference to the lives of females.
